Square adds gift cards to mobile repertoire to expand mcommerce reach

Square continues to broaden its offerings as it looks to create a mobile commerce powerhouse with a new initiative that lets users of the Square Wallet mobile payments application purchase, send and store digital gift cards.

San Francisco-based Square got its start enabling smaller retailers to accept credit card payments via an attachment for mobile devices. Having quickly built the merchant side of its business, more recently the company has been adding other services, including a mobile payments app and partnering with Starbucks to bring mobile payments to its numerous locations.

“Square’s business model is disruptive,” said Gary Schwartz, author of “The Impulse Economy” and “Fast Shopper, Slow Store.” “If Mr. Dorsey can shake the trees in the prepaid world, he can expand his business significantly.

“Prepaid gift cards are valuable for Square for two key reasons,” he said. “One is growth – a digital gift card is viral and thus expands Square’s influence horizontally.

“Secondly, is margin – Square plans to disrupt the incumbent gift card issuing fees with a low 2.75 percent charge. Given there is no high bank interchange on prepaid, Square can reap a healthy margin.”

Passbook integration
The news means mobile users can now send a friend a gift card from Square Wallet, which can be downloaded for free in the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Using the app, users can search for nearby businesses or anywhere in the United States, choose a business, click to buy a gift card and enter the recipient’s email address. Users can also send a personalized note and choose a personalized envelope before they send.

Recipients of a Square gift card can save the gift card to Square Wallet or print out a QR code.

Recipients can also save Square gift cards to Apple’s new Passbook app, which is designed to give users a way to store all of their gift cards, coupons and other merchant content in one location.

User experience key
The success of the gift card strategy may be dependent on Square being able to sign up additional big name merchants such as Starbucks, which began accepting payments via Square Wallet this fall.

“Square will have a hard time finding another commerce partner like Starbucks,” Mr. Schwartz said.

“As I like to say you can successfully sell an addictive substance – coffee – on every street corner in America – it is harder for other retailers,” he said. “With a close-loop gift card you need partners with scale.

“Key to adoption on the small screen will be the user experience – especially with a viral gift product. As Jack Dorsey says, ‘This is a product where the experience really matters.’”

For businesses, Square gift cards are easily added to the business tools provided with Square Register – the mobile app that is a companion piece to Square’s mobile point-of-sale systems. Accepting Square gift cards for merchants is similar to taking a Square Wallet payment.

Currently, users can pay with Square Wallet at over 200,000 businesses in the U.S.

“Historically, offering gift cards has been complicated and cumbersome for businesses said Katie Baynes, corporate communications manager at Square.

“Square gift cards require no extra work or cost and are fun to send and easy to use,” she said. “Our goal is always to simplify processes for businesses and their customers.

“We think Square gift cards are a great, easy way to send personalized gifts year round.”

Red, White and Ble

The red, white and blue; what does that really mean? Election Day has come and in view of all matters at hand, it appears that our country is at a crossroad. Do we become the better than every other country that we know that we as a body are or do we become the status quo country that everyone expects us to be. Some may say that’s one in the same but it truly isn’t. Many will say that we are voting our values or our conscience but what many do not stop to think about is you are actually voting your generation or your lifetime. First of all, no president, can fix do what he says in four years when you have congressman who have unlimited term limits who most likely will “sit out” their term on voting on policy if they don’t like the boss, such as the do nothing congress did when either party was in control. From my vantage point at least the democrat’s enacted policy, whether you agree or not, some which may help and some which may hurt. The republicans seem to think waiting on the sidelines until they get their way works until a natural disaster comes along which reminds them that God is truly in control. They seem to botch those pretty much because they seem to think these things will never occur so they are never prepared except for Chris Christie who seems to be a moderate republican with conservative values but that’s not allowed anymore( because that’s really an independent). Our country was built on opinion, values and disagreement but most of all what bound us was compromise. From neighbors, to schools, to work, to living, to faith we all have opinions, values, disagreements and compromise. Who we are as a people has never changed but times have changed. Our climate has changed. How we live has changed. What we must do has changed. As the world evolves, so should we. We have moral obligations to humanity to be caretakers of each other and find common ground and yet we are at a crossroad where we might actually elect someone by silencing others. If Obama wins, the right will claim the game was rigged and cry “Chicago Politics”, if Romney wins, everyone else will point out the states push for voter ID laws, countless acts of ballots being tossed and the “race card”. But in reality when is America going to win. We lose when we condone sore losers crying over spilled milk. The true sign of leadership is when you can accept defeat as a gain to learn from your mistakes and not as an opportunity to show your fear. When we go back to being the fearless country that helped each other, loved our neighbors, supported our communities, raised our children, built our schools, worshiped in our churches and supported our city then perhaps we could move the needle forward for the next generation. We are the gatekeepers of our future and we hold the keys and yet we use our vote to think that when we let someone else drive the car, they will drive better than the people that know the directions. We the people need to remain the pulse of those who are selected to lead us and when we let them determine our fate we are simply letting down our generation by propping one candidate up as if they are the solution when the problems are older than most of us. Manufacturing has been sinking since the late 80’s. Infrastructure has been deteriorating for 30 years now. Education has been at least a decade old problem. China has been pilfering us since the first Bush took office. The economy hasn’t been our friend since the Clinton years. These are old problems with new “spin cycles” called elections. Wake UP and smell what these parties are cooking. Vote for people and hold them accountable within reason meaning the president can’t save your school or your job but your state senator or house rep can. The president can’t fix your bridges or feed your homeless but your governor and your churches can. The president can’t educate your children or prepare them for life but your parents, your neighbors, your teachers, your educators and your professors can. The ecosystem is bigger than one man or philosophy and why we run to a color as if we’re a gang or a mob, we run from helping a fellow brother or sister because it’s either not relevant or politically correct. Our moral compass is being challenged by this election because at the end of the day the only thing any president can do is move the needle slightly but WE THE PEOPLE have the collective ability to move the mountain if we simply vote our will, respect our leaders, hold them accountable and compromise within our own communities on how to build lives instead of destroying until 4 years later when we are at it again. WAKE UP, Get to know your neighbors, love others as you would want you or your family members loved and work to make a difference in one person’s life and then you will see change.

99 problems but love isn’t one

Millenial 9

“If nature made you a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart. And though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that.”

By : Frances Burnett

So much is made of what is wrong with society and what is wrong with the country and why we should vote or who we should hate but not much is ever made about who we love, why we cheer for the underdog or where our common sense went. I lounge many days in today’s meeting places( Starbucks for Millennials, Mcdonalds for the Seniors) and I listen to variating accounts for what’s wrong but yet these same people who virtually spend the course of their day dissecting the issues never communicate with the person next to them to see if whatever issue there is can be solved. Hatred is a communal problem and much easy to do than ” Love”.  As Christians we are taught to love people but as soon as we get in cars from leaving service, we reenter the world we say we are not living for instead of taking 5 minutes to show interest in the person we don’t know. We criticize sectors of society without barely even scratching the surface of the facts. How can we help society if we are steadily trying to find ways to destroy it? I havebeen told how I think from more old people than I can count, including my own mother, without ever even saying a word. How’s that for an opinion? We have become a short tempered, clique and bullet point friendly, cliche’ type of culture who don’t want to move forward or make sacrifices but want to be given what we earned. the question is what did we earn? What did we actually work for? Is it about love or is it about a voting block? Love should conquer all. Here is a reminder:

If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
